Gardenia bush

I have a gardenia bush planted in a corner of my lawn. It was here when we purchased the house and, since the house is only 4 1/2 years old, the bush is approximately the same age. My problem is that it won't bloom. Last year, there were 3-4 flowers, but this year, although there were lots of buds, they all feel off the bush before opening. Any suggestions for what might be causing this and the care it needs? I am a novice at gardening.
