: I have a gardenia bush planted in a corner of my lawn. It was here when we purchased the house and, since the house is only 4 1/2 years old, the bush is approximately the same age. My problem is that it won't bloom. Last year, there were 3-4 flowers, but this year, although there were lots of buds, they all feel off the bush before opening. Any suggestions for what might be causing this and the care it needs? I am a novice at gardening.

Hi. Buds drop off for any of several reasons:

1. Transplant shock (not you)
2. Cold or frost injury (maybe)
3. Drought (most likely)
4. Insects (possible)

Water the bush very deeply and check for insects that eat the buds--they will be very very small.
