Help-my carrots have no taste at all!!

Hi. This was my first year gardening. A lot of my carrots died off, the ones that live were sooo bland, literally with no taste. A friend told me it was time to harvest, maybe it was too early? They were grown in Miracle Grow potting soil in a very large container outside in full sun. I am in USDA zone 5. Any advice for next year?
