tomatoes -- clipping bottom branches??

: So I have done TOO well this time, and I spaced them too close.  My plants are waist-high and gorgeous and going into the second flower (I snapped off the first ones).  Problem: I think the bottom branches are waaaay too thick.  Can I safely cut away the bottom branches of my tomato plants (to save energy) and not have them die or get weak.  HELP!
