brown knot in middle of tomatoe

: I have perfect looking tomatoes.  No visible blemishes.  But on the inside - opposite the stem end, there is a brown knot.  It is hard and about the size of a marble.  It has ruined my crop!  WHat is it and how do I prevent it???
