prune tomato plants? / eggplant problems!

is it correct to prune tomato plants???I have little black bugs eating the leaves on my eggplant. The bugs almost killed the plants until I picked them off one by one and killed them. now that they are finally starting to grow again the bugs are back, any suggestions???
