: hi

: a few years back I saw a PBS special with a gardener who prepares soil with beer, dishwashin detergent, and other ingredients. And hey, it worked! Does anyone know about this and perhaps the ingredients or a website for the info?

: thanks!

Hi Chuck,

I think you mean Jerry Baker. Actually I don't think he prepares the soil with those things, he uses them as ferterlizers, herbicides and pesticides. I don't recommend all that he does. He uses tobacco and that's not good for the environment. His website is www.jerrybaker.com

The best thing you can do for your plants is to give them healthy soil. It seems that you have already figured that out though. The best way to do that is to add lots of compost. Use 3" or 4" when preparing a new bed and mix in. You can topdress existing beds and the worms will mix it in for you. If you have healthy soil, your plants will be stronger and more able to fight off pests.

Regards,
Newt
