: I live in zone 5 Illinois just outside of chicago and purchase an affican lily (Agapanthus orientalis). It was beautiful last summer and thought I would try to winter it over indoors since I was told it would not tolerate our cold winter weather. Well now in late january it sent up a flower stalk that is about 8 inches tall now. Is this thing really going to open up for me? Should I start watering more often and give it some fertilizer? I thought of moving it to a sunnier spot. I thought I was just doing well keeping it green all winter. Has anyone had one of these bloom over the winter and indoors on top of it?

Hi Karen,

Whatever you are doing now, just keep doing it because it's happy. I often add a tablespoon of milk to the watering can and use it on all my plants. If your milk container is empty you could just add water and use that to water your plants.

Here's a picture.
