What grows with little sun and little water?

My 6th grade students and I are doing a community service project at our school. Due to budget cuts, landscaping service is not being provided for our site and there is a bare dirt area outside our classroom that we are going to plant.
The area is under a stairwell and gets little sun. There is no irrigations and the watering will be done by the students. We are interested in what kind of plants would be successful in such an area. It is approximately 10' by 15' so the area is pretty big. It is fenced so there will be no foot traffic in it. Could someone give me some suggestions?
