: My 6th grade students and I are doing a community service project at our school. Due to budget cuts, landscaping service is not being provided for our site and there is a bare dirt area outside our classroom that we are going to plant.
: The area is under a stairwell and gets little sun. There is no irrigations and the watering will be done by the students. We are interested in what kind of plants would be successful in such an area. It is approximately 10' by 15' so the area is pretty big. It is fenced so there will be no foot traffic in it. Could someone give me some suggestions?

Do keep in mind that whatever you plant will probably need watering over the summer until their root systems get established. You don't say your zone or state, so it would be difficult to recommend plants. If you're in Arizona, the plant list would be different than if you're in North Dakota. Here's a zip code zone finder.
Here's a couple of sites for plants that will survive in dry shade.
You may have to research them at www.google.com and put the botanical names (when possible) in quotes. You can often click on 'Images' and get pictures as well.
Hope this helps. If not, get back to us. Good luck to you and your class.
