Experience is important. Some designers have never worked in the field professionally - digging, trenching, raking, planting, pruning.
Generally, the smaller the area, the worse the repercussions of design by the unskilled or inexperienced.
For some reason, big areas allow designers to get a away with "crime".
But little areas will show design flaws very quickly.
Design is not just art, its fitting things into a space, and choosing plants that can be controlled and manipulated to stay in the yard.
That's why I put my "speel" in at AMERICAN GARDEN MUSEUM.

Go to Oregon, the click on Beaverton/Vaden. That's my promo for pruning and design.
