Growing plants in between bricks of brick patio?

: We just laid a brick patio with sand in the cracks. We like the look of moss and other small plants in the cracks.  Is this something we should have planted while laying the patio?  Something to wait to develop over time or is their another solution?  Seeds?  Thanks.
