shrub ideas

I need some gardening advice. I want to plant some shrubs or bushes in my yard, but I don't know where to begin. I would like to plant a few different bushes, and maybe even a few small trees. I see plants I would like all the time when I'm driving, but then when I try to do research I can't really find anything.

I don't like the look of formal or stiff shrubs or bushes. I want something that has strong branches, yet flexible also. Branches that are really durable and won't break off easily. I would like to grow something that grows pretty fast also.

Can someone point me in the right direction?
