Congratulations on your new home! The best time to establish a lawn is in the fall. You could use vinegar to kill the weeds, remove all the dead stuff either by raking or with a rented sod stripper, add compost and reseed. Here's a few sites. The first one explains how to sod, but the process is the same for seeding.
