Hi Joanne,
It sure is a vicious weed and a difficult one to get rid of. Just soak the ends in white vinegar for two days to kill the root system. If that doesn't do it, you can soak the stem in RoundUp for 48 hours. Just put the vinegar or RU in a small clear container like you get potato salad in from the deli. Cut a slit in the lid and insert the vine.

Caution - if using the RoundUp, cut the stem before you remove it from the lid and take it to a safe place to remove from the lid. If it splashes on any plant material, it could be fatal for the plant.
