Does anyone know what would take the leaves off of a sunflower plant? I planted sunflowers in a garden bed in late May. They have been growing wonderfully and some are about 2 and a half feet tall already. Just yesterday when I watered them I found that about half of them had had most of their leaves taken completely off, and this morning only one plant is left without any leaves taken off. One plant was completely broken, but the others are still upright and look healthy (except for the obvious lack of leaves). There are no animal or human footprints in the garden. There are a few insects on them, but I don't know what insect would devour the leaves that fast. They're just gone--not lying on ground or anything. Do you think a bird might have done this? What can I do to prevent it?
Thanks!
Jessica
