Hi Sue,
Good for you not wanting to use toxic chemicals. I just answered a very similar question for another Sue! So, here's what I suggested to her.
You could use vinegar. There's a stronger type that's 20% solution that you can get for such a purpose, but most folks use 5% white vinegar from the supermarket full strength for such a purpose with good results. Take a look at these.

You might also find these sites for organic lawn care helpful once you get those weeds under control. It really isn't a bad thing to have some weeds, as a monoculture isn't as environmentally healthy as a diverse one.
