Need advice - gutter or something else?

: I have just completed my sideyard.  Brick walkway from front to back.  4 foot beds on each side.  One bed is 3/4 of the way under eave of house.  I planted ferns, hostas, dwarf gardenia...but, in planning this didn't consider the rain would come straight off the roof into this bed.  I have moved everything back so it won't be beaten to death.  I am trying to come up with something other than having to have a gutter installed.  Do you think any of these would work:  dig out a few inches deep and put small rocks or pea gravel?  Or maybe something that could take the occasional beating down, like monkey grass?  I am at a loss and would appreciate any suggestions.  Thanks
