Common Bacterial Blight (Beans)

Common Bacterial Blight (Beans) Description: During periods of warm, humid weather, bacterial blight can be especially harmful to pods. Overwintering occurs in infested plant debris. Solution: After harvest, thoroughly till crop residue into soil. Rotate crops. Spray Soap-Shield® Fungicidal Soap before disease normally appears. Continue applications as long as weather conditions are favorable to the disease.

Fusarium Root Rot (Peas)

Fusarium Root Rot (Peas) Description: Darkening of stem at soil level, root decline and, as disease progresses, general loss of vigor, stunting, and death of leaves. A serious disease of peas in all areas of the U.S. Solution: Minimize soil compaction and maintain good soil fertility. Alternating with cover crops helps general soil fertility and decreases soil compaction. Sprinkle SoilGardTM […]

Cucumber Beetle

Cucumber Beetle Description: The spotted cucumber beetle is notorious for spreading cucumber bacterial wilt. Body is 1/4″ long, yellowish-green with 12 distinct black spots on its wings. Larvae grow to 1/2″ long. The striped cucumber beetle is 1/5″ long with yellow-and-black striped wings. Preferred foods: cucumbers, beans, melons, squash, pumpkins, corn and eggplant. Beetles lay their eggs in the ground […]

Fusarium Wilt (Cucurbits)

Fusarium Wilt (Cucurbits) Description: In young melon, cucumber and watermelon plants: damping-off, stem collapse, and death. In older plants: yellowing, stunting, wilting, and death. The disease is established wherever cucurbits are grown. Solution: Maintain soil pH at 6.5 to 7.0. Test soil pH; if it is too acid, use ground limestone to raise pH. Most garden centers and farm stores […]

Cutworm Description: Gray or brown caterpillar curls up when disturbed; rarely seen during the day; 1-2″ long, fat body. Black and variegated cutworms are the most destructive and widespread. They eat all garden vegetables, especially tender young seedlings and transplants. While some cutworms eat leaves, the telltale sign of their presence is a plant which has been “sawed off” near […]

Gray Mold (Beans)

Gray Mold (Beans) Description: Gray mold is most common when flowering occurs during a cool period of high humidity. Crowded plants with a dense canopy of leaves also encourage gray mold. Infection begins in the flower and spreads to the pod. . Solution: Rows should be thinned to allow breezes to dry leaves. Avoid overwatering and overfertilizing with nitrogen. Apply […]

Damping-Off (Lettuce)

Damping-Off (Lettuce) Description: Seed decay, sudden wilting of seedlings, loss of vigor. Favored by high moisture level and poorly drained soils. Damping-off disease occurs wherever lettuce is grown. Solution: Minimize soil compaction and plant in well-drained soil. Alternating with cover crops helps general soil fertility and decreases soil compaction. Sprinkle SoilGardTM Microbial Fungicide over seed at time of sowing, before […]

Gray Mold (Tomatoes)

Gray Mold (Tomatoes) Description: Gray mold begins in cool weather. However, unlike many diseases, it doesn’t need high humidity to flourish. Low soil pH encourages more severe gray mold infection. The most characteristic sign of gray mold is its fuzzy, felt-like appearance. Solution: If gray mold has been a problem in past years, begin spraying Soap-Shield® Fungicidal Soap at time […]

Downy Mildew (Cucurbits)

Downy Mildew (Cucurbits) Description: A period of at least 6 hours at 100% humidity on the leaf surface is required for infection. Downy mildew symptoms vary considerably, plant to plant. Lesions appear first on the oldest leaves and then spread to the younger leaves. Solution: Use plant spacings which reduce canopy density, and avoid overhead watering to help reduce the […]

Anthracnose (Cucurbits)

Anthracnose (Cucurbits) Description: Attacks most cucurbits in warm, wet weather. Infected fruit develops circular brown to black sunken areas, up to 1″ across. Overwintering occurs in plant refuse and on seed. Cucumber beetles and splashing water spread spores. Solution: For best control, begin spraying with Soap-Shield® Fungicidal Soap before the disease normally appears (when warm, humid weather is the normal […]
