Brassica oleracea
( Charmant Cabbage )
| 'Charmant' generally matures in 70 days. Green heads with pale interiors usually weigh between 3 and 4 pounds. Well-suited to close-spacing. Cabbage is a cool season vegetable that tolerates frost but not heat, and is a member of the cole family. Like broccoli, it is a biennial, grown as an annual. The head itself is an enlarged terminal bud made of expanded and crowded, overlapping leaves. Cabbage can range from white, to green, to purple, or red. Cabbage heads will not form properly is weather is hot (plant will bolt) or if there is not enough water. Plant cabbage in soil that has a pH range between 6.5 and 7.5. This will discourage disease and allow the plant to make the most of nutrients in the soil. A balanced fertilizer should be worked into soil at a rate of 1 pound/100 square feet. Set out 4 to 6 week old transplants 2 feet apart in rows that are 3 feet apart. Experienced gardeners know not to set all cabbage transplants out at one time. If planting from seed, plant 1 inch deep, 3 inches apart, then thin to 2 feet apart.
Cabbage will benefit from mid-season fertilization. Plenty of water and night temperatures around or below 20 degrees F seem to yield the best crop. Harvest by cutting off heads, leaving 3 or 4 outer leaves. Many times, you'll be able to get a second harvest of several smaller heads off of this stalk. Cabbage can be grown in a container. |
| Important Info : From transplants, days to harvest are between 60 to 105, from seed, 80 to 180. |
