|'Late Santa Rosa'is like 'Santa Rosa' but follows a full month later, producing the same medium to large plums, purplish red skin with interior flesh yellow, reddish towards the skin surface. Rich and tart flavor. Important commercially, best in drier climates. Japanese Plums are best grown in the South and West, as they are not as cold hardy as the European Plums, blooming earlier, so more subject to frost damage. Generally produce better when cross pollination occurs. Heavy bearing varieties need to have the fruit thinned.
