| Monarch or Illinois is wide spreading and reaches a mature height of 85 feet, which is unusual for the species. The state tree of Louisiana, this deciduous conifer is known for its butress-like trunks and "knees". Plant this one for the grandchildren as it lives for literally a thousand years. Thrives in deep, fertile soil that is moist to wet. Ironically, we've seen this tree handle drought situations pretty well too. Wood is very strong, and you rarely see these trees knocked over by huricanne force winds. Fall color is brownish orange. Knees are known to form only when tree is planted next to or in water or boggy conditions. |
