| 'Excelsior' is a fast growing, upright tree becoming teardrop-shaped with age. Reaches 35 to 40 feet tall. New foliage emerges vibrant red, turns dark green in summer and brilliant orange and fiery red in fall. Smooth, light gray bark becomes deeply ridged with age. Showy red flowers precede foliage on intriguing reddish branches. Exceptional fall color. An excellent large lawn tree. Native to eastern United States. 'October Glory' (best heat tolerance) and 'Red Sunset' (better in cooler areas) widely available. |
