| Spiny, toothed leaves covered with cobweb-like, soft, grey hairs. Leaves are arranged alternately on coarse, usually free-branching, white, woolly stems. The leaf base generally continues down stems as conspicuous wings. Pale purple flowerheads are large and round, 1- 1/2 to 2 inches across, encased in spine tipped bracts. This is a very striking plant for the edge of the fertile, well-drained border where it can receive full sun.
