| Acer saccharum is a large maple best known as the source of maple syrup. 'Green Mountain' has an upright, oval form, reaching 60 to 75 feet tall and spreading 45 feet. This is a heat tolerant cultivar and is good for hot, dry regions. Mature bark is deeply furrowed, gray brown. Foliage is leathery and dark green in summer; orange and red colors are displayed in fall. Greenish-yellow flowers are borne on 1- to 3-inch clusters, in mid spring. Prefers moist, well drained fertile soil, tolerates shade, does not tolerate pollution or salt. Leaf scorch can be serious in drought conditions, and Verticillium wilt can be serious. It is an excellent tree for large park areas, with unparalleled fall color and overall attractive appearance. |
