Rhododendron hybrida
( Alex North Tisbury Azalea )
| Resembling its ancestor, Rhododendron nakaharai , this cold hardy, (between 0 and -10 degrees Fahrenheit) evergreen azalea is a very late bloomer, continuing well into midsummer. Habit is prostrate and low, making it a very suitable ground cover or hanging basket. Flowers of Alex are red and showy.
Provides fantastic fall color with bronzy foliage. Filtered light is best. Plant as you would any azalea: high and in well-drained, acid soil, rich in organic matter. North Tisbury hybrids have been produced by Mrs. Polly Hill on Martha's Vineyard since 1957. Though azaleas have a potentially large list of possible pest and disease problems, they are usually trouble free if planted correctly in proper cultural conditions. |
