Acer saccharum
( Fairview Sugar Maple )
| Acer saccharum is a large maple best known as the source of maple syrup. 'Fairview' has a broad to oval form, reaching 50 feet tall and spreading 40 feet. Bark is lighter than usual. Foliage is emerald green in summer; orange color displayed in fall. Greenish-yellow flowers are borne on 1- to 3-inch clusters, in mid spring. Prefers moist, well drained fertile soil, tolerates shade, does not tolerate pollution or salt. Leaf scorch can be serious in drought conditions, and Verticillium wilt can be serious. It is an excellent tree for large park areas, with unparalleled fall color and overall attractive appearance. |
