| Achimenes is a Mexican species, very distinct and unusual. Dormant, rhizomatous perennials, Achimenes are grown for their flowers that appear from summer to fall. Each of the rhizomes produces a single upright, spreading, or trailing stem, with or without branches. Achimenes pendunculata grows to 18 inches tall. It blooms later than other species with orange flowers, shaded with yellow with red specks in the throat. During growing season, feed every two weeks. Likes a warm and light location, out of direct sun. Dies back over the winter. Dormant rhizomes can be kept in peat moss at 50 degrees Fahrenheit. |
