| Tolmiea menziesii is a perennial plant, also grown as an indoor plant, primarily for its attractive foliage. Leaves are 5 inches wide, lobed, forming a nice basal rosette. New leaves form at the juction of the leaf stalk, on top of the old leaves, hence the name "piggy-back" plant. Flowers are tiny, brownish, inconspicuous, but appear on 1 to 2 foot stems. Can be used as a shady groundcover, in areas without foot traffic. Requires full to partial shade, and abundant water. Native to the Coast Range from N.California to Alaska. As a houseplant it needs filtered light, lots of watering, and cool temperatures. A wonderful hanging plant. |
