|Spiraea japonica Flaming Mound is a compact deciduous shrub with a mounding habit. Sharply toothed leaves are deep green on top, grayish-green below, lance-shaped, to 3 inches long, turning brilliant fire red in fall. In summer, showy, deep pink flowers are borne prolifically in upright, rounded corymbs to 4 inches in diamter. Spiraea can be nipped by late frost, prune after flowering. Fast growing, good for filling a space in a shrub border. Prefers full sun and well drained soil. Native to China and Japan.
