|Sequoiadendron giganteum is a giant conifer reaching 250-300' in the wild. Under cultivation in the eastern U.S. it usually does not exceed 60'. England, with its high moisture climate, has produced many specimens over 100'. Habit is pyramidal and dense in youth, with age the lower branches are lost, the crown remains. Pendulous branches of 'Pendulum' create an arching effect. Needles are bluish green, cones are 1 1/2-3" long, reddish brown in maturity. The bark is fibrous, reddish brown. It suceeds better in the eastern U.S. than Sequoia sempervirens, tolerating drier conditions. Native to California's Sierra Nevada Mountains at 4500-8000 foot elevation.
