| Ilex cassine is seldom seen in the garden, but is significant because of all the wonderful hybrids between it and Ilex opaca, the American holly. The Dahoon holly is a small evergreen tree that grows to about 20 feet tall and 10 feet wide (larger in the wild). It thrives in zones 7 to 9 and has either yellow or red berries. In the wild, you will find this plant growing in moist woods. 'Bryanii' is a female cultivar. Leaves are a medium olive green color, 1 3/4 to 2 1/2 inches long, young stems are purplish. Berries are vivid yellow, round to slightly oval, 7/32 inch in diameter. Small, upright, spreading habit. |
