Cucumis melo
( Green Climbing Melon )
| 'Green Climbing' is an heirloom variety of melon which is small and green. The vines are vigorous climbers, and can be trellised effectively, or draped over fences. The skin is hard and thick, and resembles that of an acorn squash. These melons will store until December if picked before the first frost. They are 4-5 inches long and 4 inches in diameter. The flesh is green, and juicy and sweet. Melons can be a challenge to grow, so dependant are they on good soil and hot weather. They can be difficult to grow outside the region in which they were developed. Baking hot, sandy soil, is generally a good bet for improving your crop. It is useful to have a cold frame to get the plants going early. Starting them in pots can also be useful, as the roots will be less disturbed by transplanting. |
