| Achimenes is a Mexican species, very distinct and unusual. Dormant, rhizomatous perennials, Achimenes are grown for their flowers that appear from summer to fall. Each of the rhizomes produces a single upright, spreading, or trailing stem, with or without branches. The dark green leaves are toothed and downy. Achimenes coccinea is a compact grower from Jamaica, free flowering with medium sized brilliant red flowers. Also known as Achimenes erecta and Achimenes pulchella. |
