|Pittosporum tenuifolium is a large evergreen shrub or small tree, erect, bushy, fast-growing when young. The foliage is leathery, glossy, medium green throughout the year. Bell-shaped, honey-scented, dark red to purple flowers appear singly or in small clusters, in late spring and early summer, followed by small, gray-black capsules. Quite a tolerant plant, will stand sandy soil to clay, hot, dry conditions, salt spray and heavy shade. Can get leaf spot and mealy bugs.
Warm climate plant, native to New Zealand. 'Purpureum' is similar to 'Nigricans', though with a more open habit and purple leaves.
