| Scabiosa columbaria is a hairy, branching perennial with grayish-green, simple or pinnate, long-stalked basal leaves, to 6 inches long, and similar colored, pinnatified stem leaves. Long-lasting, summer borne flowers are bluish-purple, solitary, up to 1 1/2 inch wide. The name pincushion perfectly fits the description of the flower as it has a rounded form. Scabiosa thrives in soil that is sunny, neutral to alkaline, well-drained, and on the dry side. It does not like excessive winter moisture and should be divided every 3 years or it will die out or become less vigorous. Native to Europe and western Asia. |
