| Stoneham Gold is conical, producing bright gold new leaves, aging to dark green. In general, Thuja plicata is a large, pyramidal tree, has a buttressed base, often multiple trunks. It grows much larger in the Pacific Northwest. The bark is reddish brown, and extremely fibrous, a traditional source for basket fibers. Foliage maintains a steady green all year round, and mature trees maintain their lower branches. Cones are very small, 1/2 inch, green in summer, maturing to brown. Prefers moist, well drained soils, acidic. Natural habitat is moist to wet soils, shaded forests, and bogs. Subject to heartrot and bagworm. Useful as a specimen tree, or a tall hedge, can easily overgrow as a hedge in moist climates. Native from Alaska to N.California and Montana. Several cultivars have been developed. |
