Cucumis melo
( Citron Melon )
| 'Citron', also known as 'Green Citron' is an heirloom melon, globular of shape and weighing 2.5-3 pounds. The flesh is yellow-green, and the skin yellow-brown with green mottling. It can be sweet, but is not one of the more flavorful heirloom melons. However, it is extremely early--one of the earliest heirloom varieties generally available.
Melons can be a challenge to grow, so dependant are they on good soil and hot weather. They can be difficult to grow outside the region in which they were developed. Baking hot, sandy soil, is generally a good bet for improving your crop. It is useful to have a cold frame to get the plants going early. Starting them in pots can also be useful, as the roots will be less disturbed by transplanting. Vine productivity can be improved by pruning. When the vines are 2.5 feet long, remove the end buds, which will encourage lateral growth. Keeping the vines short will preserve the plant's resources for the fruit. |
