| This is a suckering, erect, deciduous shrub or small tree with spines only on flower stalks. Grows to 8 feet tall and 10 feet wide. Dark green leaves are pinnate to 12 inches in length, with 9 to 13 ovate to oblong leaflets. Rose-pink, fragrant flowers, to 1 1/4 inch long are held in pendant racemes, to 5 inches in length. Followed by brown, bristly seed pods, to 2 1/2 inches long.
Though a popular street tree, it really should not be used close to power lines. When mature, hard wood has to be pruned in order to keep a nice form. Native to Southeastern U.S. |
