| Prunus maritima is a dense and rounded shrub, growing to 6 feet tall or more. The leaves are simple, ovate or elliptic and alternate. Foliage is a dull green, flowers are white, either single or double, 1/2 inch across, blooming in late spring. Late summer brings dull purple fruits up to 1 inch in diameter, highly prized for jams and jellies. This plant is abundant in the Cape Cod, Massachusetts area, and is very salt tolerant. Introduced in 1818. |
