Magnolia grandiflora
( Baby Doll Magnolia )
| 'Baby Doll' produces smaller than typical foliage and flowers but both are of fine quality. Could reach as large as twenty or more feet at maturity. This evergreen tree has a broadly conical growth habit. Leaves are dark green, leathery, glossy, broadly ovate, to 8 in. long with rust, hairy undersides. Large fragrant flowers are cup-shaped and creamy white with 9-10 petals up to 10 in. across. For an overall, better-shaped plant, with longer bloom time and nicer foliage select a named cultivar such as: 'Bracken's Brown Beauty' - probably one of the best selections, compact form, dark green leaves with rusty brown undersides, should mature around 30 feet, 'Edith Bogue' - narrow leaves, tight, pyramidal form, very cold hardy, 'Glen St.Mary' - flowers at a relatively young age, bushy, pyramidal form, matures at around 20' tall and wide, 'Goliath' - extremly large, nice flowers, fairly compact, leaves blunt at the tip, 'Little Gem' - the smallest of the magnolias, but don't think this one is a miniature either. Leaves are noticably smaller, flowers early, often used as an espallier or limbed up for smaller gardens. Flowers when very young, 'Victoria' hardiest of all, selected in Vancouver, B. C., used primarily in the Pacific Northwest. |
| Important Info : It is best to allow magnolia limbs to grow to the ground. Limbed up trees can be a maintenance nightmare due to leaf drop. |
