| Elsholtzia stauntonii is a semi-woody shrub, growing to 3 to 5 feet tall and wide. Leaves are opposite, simple and lanceolate. The main horticultural value of this shrub is the flowers. In early to mid fall, purple-pink flowers appear on 4 to 8 inch long spikey panicles at the ends of the stems. It thrives in well drained soil and full sun. Prune before plant puts out new growth, since it flowers on new stems. In a northern climate, treat it like an herbaceous perennial; it flowers on the new seasonal growth. Can be grown from softwood cuttings. Native to northern China, introduced 1905. |
