|Microphylla is a compact, attractive plant that can be used as a low hedge for a formal setting. The leaves are smaller than the species, oval-round, with a glossy, leathery texture. Microphylla seems like a great, inexpensive, edging boxwood substitute for the formal garden because of its heat, drought, and soil tolerance, but pest and disease problems seem to damper the possibilities. Watch for scale, thrips, or spider mites, as well as powdery mildew, where air is stagnant and humid. Locate in full sun to prevent mildew.
