Zanthoxylum piperitum
( Japanese Prickly Ash )
| Z. piperitum is one of the most ornamental of the prickly ash group; a dense shrub or small tree 8-15 feet tall. Foliage is beatiful, glossy, and dark green, with compound pinnate leaves. May turn a nice yellow fall color. Greenish yellow flowers are borne on small corymbs, 1-2 inches wide in early summer. The reddish fruit has shiny black seeds that are ground as a pepper in Japan. Spines are in pairs at each node. Native from China, Japan, Korea. |
