| 'Checkerboard' is a very free-flowering vigorous upright shrub with 36 inches long, strong stems, covered with drooping, medium, single flowers with long red tubes and sepals that later turn white, with dark red corollas. Flowers appearing first in mid summer and continuing to frost. Oval leaves are in groups of 2 or 3, and are 1 inch long. This is a very graceful, hardy, but delicate looking plant. Mulch heavily where winters are cold. Prune back broken or dead branches in spring, especially on plants that were left outside in areas with mild winters. Frequently visited by hummingbirds.
