Ficus carica
( Granata Persian Fig )
| Granata is somewhat more tender than other varieties and has some difficulty bearing fruit in Puget Sound region, but fruit will survive further south in Oregon. This tree bears large blue-black fruit, with pink pulp, which ripens in June on old wood and often again in August on current year's wood. Ideal for eating fresh or preserves. Leaves are large and silky, 3 or 5 lobed, from 4 to 10 inches long. Provides dense shade. Locate where ripe fruit will not drop on patios, terraces or drives. Granata is easy to train as an espalier. Tolerant of a wide variety of soils and loves heat. Does not need pollination. |
| Important Info : Protect young figs from pocket gophers by planting in large, wire baskets. |
