| Its typical form is an open shrub with many branches but can appear as a small tree with smooth gray bark. Oval leaves are 2 to 3 inches long with red stems. Round, yellow flowers are 2 to 3 inches wide and open from round, brown 1 inch in diameter buds. The foliage of nearly all species has a strong pungent odor similar to menthol. Well drained soil is preferable. Trees do very well planted from seed. Plant seeds in spring or summer keep shaded and water sparingly until 2 to 3 inches high. |
