| Ilex cassine is seldom seen in the garden, but is significant because of all the wonderful hybrids between it and Ilex opaca, the American holly. The Dahoon holly is a small evergreen tree that grows to about 20 feet tall and 10 feet wide (larger in the wild). It thrives in zones 7 to 10 and has either yellow or red berries. In the wild, you will find this plant growing in moist woods. 'Baldwin' is a female cultivar. Leaves are a medium olive green color, 1 3/16 to 2 3/8 inches long. Widest at base and/or middle. Berries are vivd red globes, 7/32 to 5/16 inch diameter. Small, pyramidal, upright tree habit. |
