| Tilia americana is a large, stately, deciduous tree. Growth habit is pyramidal in youth, as it matures lower spreading branches curve upward, forming an oblong crown. Bark is gray-brown, with scaly ridges. Leaves are dark green above, pale green below, fall color is occasionally yellow, but often the leaves fall off while still green. Fragrant, small, pale yellow flowers are borne in 2 to 3 inch wide cymes. It is quite adaptable, but does not tolerate much air pollution, subject to various diseases. Can be used on larger properties and parks as a nice native tree of interest. Native from Canada to Alabama, west to N.Dakota, Texas. Various cultivars have been developed. |
