| 'Frederici' is an evergreen shub, 6 feet high by 6 feet wide. Slow growing shrub has small, narrow, creamy-yellow leaves with glossy, dark green margins above, and silvery-brown on the undersides. The stems may develop 3 inch long thorns, stems and thorns both covered with brown scales. The flowers are fragrant, silvery-white, usually in threes, emerging from the leaf axils. The inconspicuous flowers bloom in late fall, hidden amongst the leaves, but the fragrance makes up for it. In mid to late spring, the small fruits appear, they are silvery-brown initially, turning red later on, and attract birds.
Tolerant of many soil conditions, salt, drought and pollution. Requires frequent pruning, may contract spider mites. Used extensively in highway plantings; good for erosion control, hedges and natural barriers. Various cultivars have been developed which do not exhibit such a weedy growth habit. The stems may develop 3" long thorns, stems and thorns both covered with brown scales.
